Residing on a steep hill that reaches a maximum of 444.5 feet above sea level, Capitol Hill is home to an abundance of coffee houses, taverns, bars, and studio apartment buildings. The highly populated residential district is home to over 46,500 people and is situated just east of the city's central business district. The Capitol Hill area is surrounded by Eastlake and Portage Bay to the north, Washington Park to the east, Seattle University to the south, Interstate 5 to the west, and sparkling Lake Union to the northwest.
Capitol Hill contains some of the wealthiest districts in the city and is offers many activities and attractions for people of all ages and ways of life. While being one of the city's most outstanding nightlife and entertainment districts, Capitol Hill is also the center of the city's gay and countercultural communities. Ever since July of 1997, Capitol Hill has been very well-known for its annual Capitol Hill Block Party that attracts people from all over the state. Also in the area are two of the city's best-known movie theaters, Starbucks of course, and some local coffeehouses that have been quite successful over the years. Home to the original building of the Cornish College of the Arts, Capitol Hill also is home to many bookstores and churches that play into the historic realm of the district.
