Targeted specifically for high-density development by former Seattle Mayor Norm Rice, the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle has been riding the wave of a booming real estate market that has survived even the Great Recession. The coastal area of Sunset Hill enjoys particularly high property values, benefiting not only from the success of Ballard as a whole, but also from its ideal location and spectacular views of beautiful Puget Sound and the Olympic Peninsula. Just how best to serve the Sunset Hill area with transit and promote the neighborhood's further growth are hotly debated issues in Seattle, but efforts to reduce traffic and promote carbon neutrality are already in the works.
In the meantime, the thriving economic climate in this area of Seattle has given rise to many new businesses, in particular bars, restaurants and coffee houses that serve as venues for Seattle's well-known live-music scene, among them Egan's Ballard Jam House, Molly Maguire's, the Tractor Tavern and numerous others. The monthly Second Saturday ArtWalk on Ballard and Market streets showcase the work of Washington artists and photographers and the neighborhood's volunteer-run historical society sponsors tours, lectures and events year-round. Residents of Sunset Hill also benefit from a state-of-the-art library and some of the best schools in Seattle, including the in-demand biotechnology magnet program at Ballard High School.
