Lake Whatcom is about 14 miles long and over 85,000 Whatcom County residents rely on Lake Whatcom for drinking water. However, locals know Lake Whatcom to be mostly a popular recreational site for activities such as: boating, swimming, fishing, kayaking, days at the park and much more! There are parks surrounding the lake, as well as other neighborhoods, trails and a drive around to the other side of the lake will take you to the popular The Fork at Agate Bay restaurant that uses local ingredients! When you live in Sudden Valley you have access to several parks on the beaches of Lake Whatcom and throughout the neighborhood, marina and am and pm beaches!
The Sudden Valley Golf Course features instruction, golf junior golf, dining and a driving range. The 18-hole course has a unique, challenging course with the front nine holes open and flat and the back nine holes more narrow and water hazards throughout fourteen of the eighteen holes. There are lessons available for all levels, even juniors! Their Pro-shop has everything you would need to make your style match your game. After you hit the driving range, come sit back and relax at the family-owned El Agave Mexican Restaurant on the course.
Lake Louise is a small, quiet lake in the neighborhood, and has a one-mile trail. There is also the Lake Louise Park that is a small waterfront park on the Lake Louise Trail. This small park features picnic areas and a bird sanctuary. Lake Louise is just minutes walking distance from the Sudden Valley Golf Course and the Community Center.
Many of the few businesses in the community also reside near Lake Louise and the Sudden Valley Golf Course. These include, the El Agave Mexican Restaurant on the golf course, Trino’s Pizza & Pasta Co, Hermes Bookstore, Salon and Day Spa Sudden Valley and Creekside Cafe. The Creekside Cafe is in the Community Center and is a great, quiet place to use free wifi and enjoy some coffee. Trino’s Pizza & Pasta Co. is a community favorite for their food and their service.
The Stimpson Family Nature Reserve is off of Lake Louise Road, north of the community and offers over four miles of hiking trails through a beautiful forested area. The area is mostly undisturbed and has trees that are over 400 years old! Since this area is a nature reserve, expect to see two ponds, the Geneva Pond and the Beaver Pond, wetland areas and a variety of wildlife, including deer, beavers, cougars and smaller animals!
Driving north from the community along Lake Whatcom Boulevard, you will find parks and schools! First you will reach the Western Washington University Watersports facility before you leave Sudden Valley. The Watersports facility is open for Western students and faculty and provides lessons through the college and also rentals for a fun day on the lake. Continuing past Strawberry Point, you will reach the Geneva neighborhood less than 4 miles north of the Sudden Valley community. There are several schools in the area, including: Geneva Elementary, Kulshan Middle School, Whatcom Hills Waldorf School. There are several more schools as you continue to enter the city of Bellingham.
There are also several parks as you enter Bellingham, such as: Euclid Park, Bloedel Donovan Park and Whatcom Falls Park. Bloedel Donovan Park has a boat launch, BBQ Grills, sports fields, picnic areas, playgrounds and connection to the Railroad Trail. Whatcom Falls park is a very popular park that has a history of over a century! The park has over 241 acres of land and includes several features for the whole family, including: the Derby Pond for children 14 and under seasonal fishing, BBQ Grills, play areas, fish hatchery, multipurpose fields, basketball court, picnic areas, tennis courts, several trails and of course beautiful waterfalls! Euclid Park is a small, quiet park on the shore of Lake Whatcom that has trails and water access. The Lookout Mountain Preserve is in the area, with 548 acres of land and includes hiking trail that leads to two gorgeous waterfalls and to a scenic overlook with a panoramic view of Lake Whatcom Reservoir and valley. Trails such as the Railroad Trail connect to many other trails that lead to Whatcom Falls Park all the way to Barkley Village or Memorial Park which connects you to sidewalks, through beautiful neighborhoods that lead downtown. There are many beautiful trails that connect and lead the way through Bellingham and the surrounding areas.
The Barkley Village neighborhood is northwest of Sudden Valley and as the name suggests, the neighborhood is along Barkley Boulevard. This newer community is a 250-acre urban village with a variety of residential, retail, office and civic uses. This neighborhood is home to popular local chain restaurants such as Bob’s Burgers and Brews, Jalape?os, Zen Sushi & Bar and Scotty Browns. The new Regal 16 IMAX & RPX movie theater is also a part of Barkley Village! This neighborhood provides a quiet relaxing environment, while having restaurants and remaining close to the exciting Downtown Bellingham area.
